There has been some recent news coverage regarding the estate of a former member of Chinese Gospel Church, Margaret Liu. Not all the coverage in print or online has been accurate. The note below clarifies the facts.
The Chinese Gospel Church of Toronto (CGC), founded in 1963, is a member of the Associated Gospel Churches of Canada. Still operating from its original inner city location at 450 Dundas St. W. in the heart of Chinatown, CGC has always served the local community including its poorest members in order to minister to their physical and spiritual needs. Some examples:
- CGC has been opening its doors continuously to the poor every Thursday evening since 1997 as part of the city-wide Out Of The Cold (OOTC) program, serving meals to over 7,500 guests and providing overnight shelter to over 2,500 guests.
- For many years CGC has provided for new immigrants to learn English as a second language (ESL) in partnership with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB).
- CGC had an outreach to refugees for many years, helping them to meet their housing and social services needs.
With this established record of working with the poor and disadvantaged, CGC strongly rejects the recent allegations connected with the estate of Mrs. Margaret Liu. The facts in this matter are as follows:
- Mrs. Liu was a member of CGC since Oct. 1999, up to the time of her death.
- CGC has never and is not named as a beneficiary of any property whatsoever in Mrs. Liu's will.
- CGC has no legal nor beneficiary relationship with any beneficiary of Mrs. Liu's estate.
- CGC is not named in any legal action pertaining to Mrs. Liu's estate.
In light of the facts above, CGC respectfully and strongly requests that there be no further attempts to suggest that CGC is connected with the disposition of Mrs. Liu's estate. CGC reserves the right to refer all future matters so-connected to legal counsel.
Sincerely,Chinese Gospel Church of Toronto
